Best Practices for Car Battery Packaging

Car battery with blue electricity surging out of it

A car battery is kind of like the beating heart for your car’s system. It makes every other function throughout the car possible. And today, as car internals become more complex and more demanding, car batteries have become more important than ever.

It’s for this reason that automotive battery packaging is critical. A well packaged car battery will always offer better, more reliable, and safer power.

But what makes for safe and proper car battery packaging? And more specifically, are there battery packaging guidelines you need to follow when assembling a car battery?

In this guide, we’ll explore each aspect of automotive battery packaging you need to know.

What Are the Battery Packaging Guidelines?

As with any electrical component, safety is of the utmost importance. But this goes beyond due diligence. In truth, there are ethical and legal consequences at stake. A failure to prioritize safety may result in electrocution or worse.

Why Package a Car Battery?

In addition to adherence to the law, it’s imperative car batteries are packaged properly to ensure product safety. If using the wrong material, the wrong housing, or a non-protective design, results are less than ideal, to put things mildly. The battery can be liable to catch fire, explode, and more. Made worse, a poorly packaged battery can be more susceptible to damage and malfunctioning if suffering an impact.

The Types of Car Battery Packages

There are different chemical makeups in different models of car battery. As such, the packages these batteries use employ different materials to ensure the battery functions properly and safely.

The typical 12V car battery is commonly packaged in a High-Density Polyethylene or Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene housing. These lightweight, impact resistant, heat-resistant, and anti-corrosive housings offer the ideal environment for a battery to function.

However, not all batteries are packaged with HDPE or ABS. Sometimes, less common and alternative materials can be used, such as:

  • Metal casing, for heavy-duty protection,
  • Elastomer shell, for impact resistance and leak-proofing,
  • Composite materials, for high temperature conditions,
  • And more.

Of course, today’s vehicles have become more complex, and so too have their batteries. Modern hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) often rely on more complex battery stacks than the traditional 12V. And these batteries, as you might imagine, need more complex car battery packaging design.

Lithium-ion batteries and module batteries often use aluminum, steel, or another metal to house their operational batteries. Batteries are often grouped in cells that are stacked together vertically or horizontally. Working as a unit, these cells offer a flexible power delivery that allows the atoms to flow with ease.

As with 12V batteries, the materials used for this type of battery packaging offers countless benefits to the vehicle manufacturer. This includes:

  • Simplified and protected shipping,
  • Secure installation in the vehicle,
  • Weight management,
  • Shock protection,
  • Damage protection,
  • Temperature control,
  • Leak prevention,
  • Legal adherence, and
  • Easier integration with the car’s system.

When it comes to car battery packaging design, following industry best practices is key for better battery chemistries. And custom battery packaging can ensure your product is both compliant and meets your business’s needs.
